Woman, 80, suffers "very minor" injuries after Metra BNSF train strikes SUV in Hinsdale
A driver suffered only "very minor" injuries when their SUV was struck by a Metra BNSF train in Hinsdale on Monday morning.
Metra posted an alert that trains were stopped and extensive delays were expected after a BNSF train struck a vehicle near Hinsdale.
Inbound and outbound trains began moving again around 1:15 p.m., but Metra said extensive delays are still anticipated.
Hinsdale police posted video of the crash to their Facebook page, saying that just before 11:45 a.m., police responded to the crash at the Monroe Street train crossing.
The video shows a car pulling up to the train crossing, with the nose of the vehicle on the tracks, and remains stopped there as the train approaches.
When the train strikes the car, it sends it spinning in the grass area between the train crossing and the road. Major front-end damage on the car was visible.
Hinsdale police said only the 80-year-old driver was in the vehicle at the time and was taken to Hinsdale Hospital for "very minor injuries."
Hindsale Village President Greg Hart said quick thinking in these kinds of situations can be difficult.
"The gate came down behind her, leading to a situation where she didn't feel like she could go forward or backward before the train came," he said." From anecdotal feedback, it seemed that an alarm in the car may have gone out, indicating that she thought that there was someone behind her."
Hart said the railroad crossing has a four-quadrant gate and is one of the most advanced technologies when it comes to rail safety.
"Even in this case, it was not enough to prevent an incident, which shows users of vehicles and pedestrians are the people that have to take accountability and ensure they're following the rules," Hart said.
The four-quadrant gate is a part of a railroad safety initiative started by a Hinsdale resident who lost his daughter at the same crossing in 1994.
"His daughter and his son were crossing this in their own vehicle decided to go around the gate that existed. It wasn't a four-quadrant at the time. Sadly, they were hit by an oncoming train, that led to Lauren Wilson to pass in her teenage years, which is very sad," Hart said.
While public awareness around these crossings is critical, the village is continuing to push rail safety forward.
"We're undergoing a study investigating every component of the downtown and our central business district, to see if there's improvements we can make to help pedestrians operate safely in Hinsdale," Hart said.
The train was mechanically disabled, police said, and passengers were transferred to another Metra BNSF train.
Metra officials said no passengers on board were injured and that their investigation is ongoing as they wait for camera footage from onboard the train.
The driver of the vehicle involved is already out of the hospital.
