Mayor Emanuel Fasts In Name Of Immigration Reform
(CBS) -- Mayor Emanuel's message Thursday to mostly Latino parishioners at St. Pius Catholic Church in Pilsen was about fasting.
The mayor said he is going to fast for the next 24 hours to support others doing the same thing on behalf of immigration reform in Washington.
"It is essential to remind the United States Congress that there is support for immigration reform throughout the country," he said.
As a congressman, Emanuel called immigration "the third rail of American politics" and worked against reform. As chief of staff of the Obama White House, he warned his boss against moving ahead on reform.
Times have changed.
"I think it's a matter of timing, but also if you live in Chicago and you realize how dramatic this issue affect many of our populations, I think he realizes it's a very important issue for us," 25th Ward Ald. Danny Solis said.
