Man Trapped In Sand Silo For Hours In Naperville
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (STMW) -- A factory employee is in "stable" condition Monday night after becoming trapped in a sand silo for several hours in west suburban Naperville.
Emergency crews responded at 11:23 a.m. to a call of a worker trapped in a sand silo at DuKane Precast at 1807 High Grove Road in Naperville, according to a Naperville Fire Department release.
The 37-year-old employee was trapped inside the silo, located inside the building about 25 feet in the air with only limited access from a catwalk, the release said. Members of the Technical Rescue Team climbed up the catwalk and found the man buried to his waist in a sand mixture.
Crews initially secured the worker from sinking deeper into the sand, the release said. Paramedics then initiated advanced life support care on the worker before the sand could be moved.
Two vacuum trucks were used to remove the sand from around the worker, the release said. Once the sand was cleared from around the worker's waist, a rescue harness was placed on him so more sand could be drained from the bottom of the silo.
Once freed, the worker was placed in a rescue basket and removed from the top of the silo and lowered to the ground, the release said. He was taken Edward Hospital in Naperville in "stable" condition.
Rescue personnel and equipment from 22 surrounding fire agencies assisted.
