Man Seriously Wounded In Police-Involved Shooting

(CBS) -- One man is in serious condition after a police involved shooting in Englewood early Saturday morning

Area south officers say they noticed a suspicious vehicle while on patrol on the 1300 block of West 73rd Street.

They looked it up in their computer system and found out it was stolen. Police say the driver punched the gas hitting several parked vehicles including one police squad.

The car eventually came to rest in a snow bank and that's when officers approached.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the officers told the suspect to come out with his hands up.

"Instead, at that point the offender is reaching into his jacket or sweater or whatever he is earing and he is pulling a gun out of his sweater," Camden said. "At that point, the officer opened fire, the offender is hit."

Police say they recovered a gun at the scene.

The driver was shot several times and taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition.

An officer and passenger were also hurt and their injuries are far less serious.
