Man Jumps From Ambulance, Dies

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 20-year-old man died after he jumped out of an ambulance heading to a hospital on the Northwest Side Sunday morning, authorities said.

Paramedics picked up the man near Mannheim and Irving Park roads about 5:36 a.m., said Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. On the way to Resurrection Medical Center, the man said he needed to vomit, Langford said, and paramedics gave him a basin.

After vomiting, the man got off the ambulance gurney and jumped out of the ambulance through the back door, Langford said.

The ambulance, which was in sight of Resurrection's emergency room, stopped and paramedics began treating the man's new injuries, Langford said, adding that the ambulance was not traveling very fast.

The man -- identified as Romero Reynoso, of the 44000 block of North Kedzie Avenue -- was pronounced dead at Resurrection Medical Center at 6:40 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Langford said the Chicago Police Department and the Fire Department have launched their own investigations, but a preliminary assessment determined that the paramedics followed the proper treatment protocols.
