Library Books On Kindle By End Of Year In Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS)-- After a long wait, Chicago Public Library officials say people who use the Kindle e-reader will soon be able to borrow library books too.
People who use devices like the Nook, Sony's e-reader and the iPad already can electronically check out library books. At the end of the three week lending period, the book erases itself.
Up to now, Amazon's Kindle has mainly handled books you purchase, says Chicago Library Commissioner Mary Dempsey.
That's going to change.

By year's end, Dempsey said she expects users of the popular Kindle e-reader can have the same experience as owners of the other e-readers. She says Amazon has agreed to allow Kindles to be compatible with the library formats.
On another front, Dempsey says Chicago continues to bring new libraries to life despite the budget crunch.
Two more will open this summer.
