Levine: White Sox Sign Melky Cabrera To 3-Year Deal

By Bruce Levine-

(CBS) The White Sox continued their flurry of offseason moves by signing outfielder Melky Cabrera to a three-year deal late Saturday night, pending a physical, a source told

The contract was worth in the vicinity of $45 million, according to a source. Neither Cabrera's agent nor Chicago had responded to inquiries about the deal as of Saturday evening.

The 30-year-old Cabrera is a .286 lifetime hitter and had another solid season in 2014, when he batted .301 with 16 home runs and 73 RBIs. He also had a .351 on-base percentage.

Cabreara will give the White Sox a solid one-two on-base punch with Adam Eaton leading off and Cabrera batting second in the totally revamped White Sox lineup for 2015.

The White Sox have taken on close to $145 million in contract obligations in the last five weeks, adding seven new players. The team now has last year's left fielder, Dayan Viciedo, available in a trade or to use as part of a designated hitter platoon with Adam LaRoche.

The Seattle Mariners -- who were said to be close to signing Cabrera -- have expressed interest in Viciedo over the past two seasons.
