Levine: Addison Russell Makes Wrigley Debut

By Bruce Levine--

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's always easier to begin a major league career starting on the road, something Cubs rookie Addison Russell learned firsthand last week. That experience helped take away the impact that local media and fan base might have had on the biggest day of the talented infielder's professional life.

"Me getting called up on the road was much easier," Russell said ahead of his home debut against the Pirates. "It had to be easier, just because of all the media and everything. It is a lot to take in when you first get here. I got to chill and be brought into this kind of easy. I am thankful for that."

Russell had the chance to do just that on the road in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati last week after his call-up on April 21 from Triple-A Iowa. Russell has struggled with the bat so far, with a .135 batting average, but he did deliver a big three-run double in Sundays 5-2 victory against the Reds.

Russell had the dual job of breaking into in the big leagues for the first time and playing a skill position he has little experience at.

"For me, knowing the little things you have to do has been the challenge," Russell said about playing second base as opposed to his natural position of shortstop. "Cuts and relays, backing up first base, covering first on bunts -- these seem like small things, but when you look at it (collectively), they are big things I have to keep in my mind."

At 21, Russell has the good fortune of playing with other talented young Cubs players who are learning how to win at the big league level for the first time. While he gathers himself trying to adjust to the best pitchers in the world every day, Russell has total support of the organization and coaching staff to relax and play his game without thinking about a demotion.

"It has been great for me," Russell said of the support he has gotten from manager Joe Maddon and the staff. "It is one thing less to worry about. I just go out there play my game. If I mess up, I hope it is an aggressive mistake. Joe, he kind of looks past that. That gives me relief to go out there and play my game."
