Lead Testing Begins At Tanner Elementary School

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Testing for lead poisoning began Tuesday for the nearly 400 students at Tanner Elementary School.

It's part of CPS's promise to address parents' concerns after unsafe levels of lead were found in some of the school's water fountains.

Nurses from St. Bernard's Pediatric Mobile Health Van were on site, testing students at Tanner for lead poisoning.

Every student, from preschoolers to 8th graders has access to testing because of the high levels of lead recently found in the school's drinking water, CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports.

The results are immediate so when Jaleel Nasir picked up his daughter this afternoon, he got the good news.

"It's negative," he said. "It's important for them to get tested."

For privacy reasons, neither the school administrators or the nurses would confirm if any students tested positive for lead.

Some parents are choosing to have their children see private physicians.
