3 killed, 5 injured in multi-car crash on I-57
All northbound lanes were closed for part of the morning rush on I-57 after three people were killed and five others were injured in a multi-car crash.
Just after midnight, Illinois State Police said troopers responded to an initial report of a three-vehicle crash south of 120th Street in south suburban Calumet City. State police said a vehicle that was not involved in the crash then hit three people who were outside of their cars after the initial crash.
Video from the scene shows debris scattered hundreds of feet from the crash site.
Witnesses described an erratic driver who possibly caused the crash. A woman involved in the crash said there was a black vehicle going at least 100 miles per hour.
Police said the three victims died at the scene.
One of the victims was identified Thursday as a 33-year-old man named Martese Williams. The other two remained unidentified.
At least five other people were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
"It was traumatic for her when she called me, she was just out of it," said Arthur Thomas.
Thomas arrived at the scene after he said his daughter told him she was involved in one of the crashes.
"A car sideswiped and then tried to run off the road, on 57 going north between 119th and 127th, and the cars had hit a couple of more cars. And they ran off the road, and when she stopped the car, they hit in front of her, I guess they knocked the people out the car," he said.
Thomas also said that his daughter tried to help others involved in the second crash.
"She said she was trying to help. There was kids in the car. too. She said the bodies were over there, but she was trying to help the kids," he said.
All northbound lanes were shut down after the crash, and traffic was diverted to the 99th Street exit ramp. All lanes reopened at 7:49 a.m.
State police are investigating the cause of the crash.
