Hundreds Of Honda Owners Still Waiting For Recalled Parts To Be Replaced
(CBS) -- Almost a year after Honda announced an airbag part recall, hundreds of owners are still waiting to get them replaced. Some are concerned the wait could pose a huge safety risk.
CBS 2's Dana Kozlov takes a look at what is causing the delay in this Original Report.
Mike Mata wishes he could help all the Honda and Acura owners who call his shop looking to get their recalled airbags replaced, but only dealerships can help. Mata's ex-girlfriend is on that list.
"She has an 03 MDX that has been on the list since I would say the end of January and we've been calling and same thing, 'we'll call you, we'll call you,' Mata said.
Backordered parts almost a year after Honda announced the recall and vehicles impacted. The concern? An inflator that could cause an airbag to overinflate and burst, sending bits of metal flying through the car.
Grossinger Honda's general manager Brian Weinberg says the holdup is trying to get all of the parts in but company is working as fast as it can. Just today, Honda announced it's even added three suppliers to help get the inflators to dealers.
Weinberg says 200 people at his dealership alone are currently waiting to get the potentially dangerous problem fixed.
"I'm going to tell you there might be safety concerns but I am also going to tell you Honda is providing many options for the customer," Weinberg said. "Alternative transportation if you feel the car is unsafe to drive."
Honda took part in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conference today focused on finding ways to improve recall repair rates.
