Grandmothers Knit From The Heart For Service Members

(CBS) -- On this Memorial Day weekend, CBS 2 learned of a group of grandmothers is giving back, with helmet warmers and scarves -- made, with love, for those who serve and those who have served.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards spent the afternoon with the needle-crafters in west suburban Downers Grove.

The battalion of grandmothers creates scarves and wool helmet-warmers for veterans and American troops in Afghanistan's drastic climate.

When the group heard about the need a few months back, they began needling. Their mission: to create warmth.

"They need us after what they've been through," Isabel Nei, 97, an Army grandmother, says.

The items are delivered with hand-written notes, with the help of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The group that makes the knittings are in need of one thing: donated wool.
