Firefighters Find Woman Dead In Apartment Blaze

UPDATED 04/21/11 8:27 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Firefighters found a woman dead inside a burning apartment Thursday afternoon on the South Side, fire officials said.

The fire started about 3:50 p.m. in a second floor unit of a large, four-story courtyard building in the 1600 block of East 67th Street, Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said.

Firefighters contained the blaze primarily to the unit's living room, where they found the woman's body while conducting a final search, MacGregor said. The woman, believed to be in her mid-50s, was dead on the scene.

Firefighters reported hearing smoke alarms from the unit across the hall, but it was not yet known if there were working alarms in the unit where the fire started, MacGregor said.

The Fire Department and the police Bomb & Arson Unit remain on the scene investigating Thursday evening.

The woman, who was dead on the scene, was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Christina Spivey, 56, of 1657 E. 67th St.

No other units were damaged and nobody else will be displaced.
