Firefighter Injured Battling Extra-Alarm Blaze In South Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago firefighter suffered cuts to his hands early Thursday while battling an extra-alarm blaze in the South Chicago neighborhood.
The fire broke out around 2:20 a.m. in an abandoned building in the 8600 block of South Escanaba Avenue, police said. It was upgraded to a 2-11 a short time later.
Part of the two-and-a-half story building collapsed as fire crews worked to bring the blaze under control, Fire Media Affairs said. The flames spread from the two-flat to an abandoned corner store before the flames were extinguished about 3:15 a.m.
A firefighter battling the blaze suffered cuts to his hands, and was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs.
Police say the building was vacant. But they had to evacuate several surrounding buildings as a precaution.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday morning.
