Feds Investigate Fatal Work Accident At Geneva Retail Mall

(CBS) --A 47-year-old man is dead after an accident during the renovation of a decorative sign and bell tower at the entrance to Geneva Commons mall in far west suburban Geneva.

Geneva Fire Chief Mike Antinore tells WBBM it happened at the 40-foot tower during renovations about 11:40 a.m. on Friday.

"Upon arrival, our first companies found two workmen at the top of the central bell tower," he says. "One was conscious and one was unconscious and unresponsive. On-scene paramedics ascertained one was deceased."

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell identified the deceased as Donald J. Tentler, 47, of West Dundee. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says preliminary indications are the worker was crushed while working in an aerial lift.

It took two to three hours to recover the victim's body.

Geneva Police, the fire department and OSHA are investigating.
