10-Year-Old And 2 Adults Killed, 3 Boys Critically Injured After Minivan Hit By Train In East Chicago
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (CBS) -- Three people are dead and three others are in critical condition after their minivan was hit by a train in East Chicago early Saturday morning in the 4600 block of Euclid Avenue.
Police say they have video of the Honda Odyssey minivan ignoring the train crossing signals just before 1 a.m. and trying to drive around the crossing arm when they were hit by the CSX freight train.
Two adults, a 36-year-old Pedro Trinidad and a 38-year-old Flor Carillo, and a 5-year-old Evelyn Trinidad were killed in the crash.
Three other young boys between the ages of 7 and 10 were treated by officers on scene and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Officers did not say if all of the people in the van were related to each other, and the identity of those killed and injured was not being released until family could be notified.
CSX issued a statement that read in part:
"CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragic incident, and we will work to support local law enforcement as they investigate. There were no reported injuries to the crew. CSX appreciates the swift response by local emergency personnel who transported three other juveniles to local hospitals. At CSX safety is our highest priority in the communities we serve. To stay safe around railroad tracks drivers and pedestrians should give their full attention and take the time to look and listen for an oncoming trains. Above all, drivers should always obey posted warning signs and signals."
