Cubs Draft Oklahoma State RHP Tom Hatch In 3rd Round

(CBS) The Cubs selected Oklahoma State right-hander Tom Hatch with their third-round pick at No. 104 overall in the MLB amateur draft on Friday.

Hatch is 7-2 with a 2.16 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 112 1/3 innings this season for the Cowboys, who are still alive in Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament. He was recently named third-team All-American by Baseball America and was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year.

Hatch is finishing up his redshirt sophomore season and is a Tulsa, Okla. native.

The selection of Hatch was the Cubs' first pick of the draft. They didn't hold a first- or second-round pick due to the offseason signings of outfielder Jason Heyward and right-hander John Lackey.

In the fourth round, the Cubs selected California Baptist University right-hander Tyson Miller, a 20-year-old who was 9-3 with a 2.27 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 107 innings as a junior.

The Cubs nabbed Duke right-hander Bailey Clark in the fifth round. The 21-year-old Clark was 4-4 with a 5.61 ERA in 15 appearances, including 10 starts, as a junior.

Right-hander Chad Hockin was selected out of Cal State Fullerton in the sixth round, then catcher Michael Cruz out of Bethune-Cookman followed in the seventh round.
