Cubs Dominate Early Returns On NL All-Star Ballot, With 5 In Line To Start

(CBS) The Cubs look like they'll be well-represented in the All-Star Game.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Ben Zobrist, shortstop Addison Russell and third baseman Kris Bryant are the leading vote-getters at their respective positions in the first returns on the NL ballot, while Dexter Fowler is second among outfielders. That puts all of them in line to start the Midsummer Classic.

Rizzo leads all NL players with 874,471 votes and is more than 600,000 ahead of his closest competition at first base. Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper is second among NL players in total votes with 838,599.

In his first season in Chicago, Zobrist is hitting .345 with an NL-best .445 on-base percentage, seven homers, 35 RBIs and a .974 OPS. His 37 runs also rank second in the NL entering play Wednesday. He's about 244,00 votes ahead of Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy.

Russell is hitting .246 with four homers and 30 RBIs. He leads Rockies shortstop Trevor Story by about 10,000 votes.

Bryant is hitting .281 with 11 homers, 37 RBIs and an .868 OPS. He's about 183,000 votes ahead of Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Rizzo is hitting .236 with 11 homers, 37 RBIs and an .866 OPS. The 37 RBIs for him and Bryant are tied for second in the NL.

Fowler is hitting .317 with a .434 on-base percentage, which ranks second in the NL behind Zobrist.

Miguel Montero was third among catchers, while Jason Heyward was fourth among outfielders in the voting. Jorge Soler was sixth among outfielders.

Here are the initial returns.

Fans elect the position-player starters, while managers and players select the rest of the All-Star rosters, save for one final fan vote for the last reserve in each league.

Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta is also a lock to make the All-Star Game, which is July 12 in San Diego, but pitchers aren't voted on by fans.
