Chicago Writer-Director Premieres Semi-Autobiographical Cancer Film

CHICAGO (CBS) – A new feature film is premiering Sunday at Loyola Hospital in Maywood.

Chicago writer-director, Lucia Mauro is releasing her new film "One Year Later" about a cancer survivor who leaves Chicago on a trip to Italy, WBBM's Terry Keshner reports.

Mauro is an ovarian cancer survivor, who was treated at Loyola Hospital in Maywood. When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer it was not the end of her world, it was the beginning of her next film.

"Our ultimate goal through the film and our screenings is to raise funds for ovarian cancer research," Mauro said.

"One Year Later" is a semi-autobiographical film. The narrative film tells the story of an American woman, who recently recovered from a serious illness, learning to savor the essence of life through a cathartic trip to the Italian Alps.

The film was shot both at Loyola University Medical Center and in Milan and Aosta, Italy.

"One Year Later" will premier Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at Loyola University Chicago's new Center for Translation Research and Education on the Maywood Campus.

In 2012, Mauro was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and experience a recurrence in 2014. She continues to receive treatment at Loyola, where she underwent surgeries and chemotherapy.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian Cancer is one of the deadliest of women's cancers. Each year, approximately 21,980 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
