Chicago man charged in killing of ex-wife, her husband in Ohio appears in court, waives right to extradition hearing

Chicago resident Michael McKee waived his right to an extradition hearing at a court hearing on Monday. He is accused of the killing of his ex-wife and her current husband inside their Columbus, Ohio, home.

Police this past weekend combed through a Chicago condo searching for clues in a double murder case that started more than 300 miles away.

McKee appeared in court Monday for the killing of his ex-wife and her current husband inside their Columbus, Ohio, home. He was being held in a jail cell in Winnebago County, Illinois.

The hearing lasted only a matter of minutes as McKee arrived in court, handcuffed in a yellow uniform reading "Winnebago County Jail.

Speaking on his behalf, court-appointed public defender Carie Poirier said McKee was aware of his rights and would waive his right to an extradition hearing – meaning he will now be handed over to the Ohio authorities handling the murder investigation.

Judge Donald Shriver set a 2 p.m. status hearing for next Monday, one week from today, on his transfer. If he is extradited to Ohio before that hearing, it will be canceled.

McKee then signed papers and left the courtroom before 1:30 p.m.

Court records in Ohio showed a warrant for McKee's arrest on two counts of premeditated murder.

The search for evidence brought Ohio investigators to the top floor of a quiet building at 2100 N. Lincoln Park West in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, where a corner apartment was used by McKee.

McKee is accused of shooting and killing Monique and Spencer Tepe, his ex-wife and her current husband. Police said they were found in their Columbus home late last month after Spencer Tepe, a popular dentist, did not show up for work.

There were no signs of forced entry. Police released a video asking for help before arresting McKee in Rockford, Illinois, linking him to a car seen on surveillance video around the murder scene.

Back at the Lincoln Park building, a resident and former journalist said she started noticing signs on Saturday with a squad car parked outside, news cameras, and a Chicago police officer on watch.

"I said show me a picture, and I said, oh my gosh, I know the guy, I talked to him at the pool," said longtime resident Gera-Lind Kolarik.

Kolarik shared the videos from inside her building, where that Chicago police officer was seen standing guard at the front door just before Ohio investigators arrived — their truck parked in the garage.

"I just came from upstairs right now, and I had seen the police officers up there," she said. "They're going through the apartment right now. They had the door open. They were taking stuff out, putting stuff in boxes right now."

Kolarik added that she first met McKee at the building's rooftop pool over the summer as he was using the grill.

"We just talked to each other — was very pleasant, very nice man, and he had just moved in," she said.

The building management told condo owners and residents, "Due to an active police investigation involving a resident... they may see and encounter law enforcement officials in and around the building over the next few days."

Kolarik said the high-profile case may have caught the attention of people living here, though her final thoughts remain with the victims — the Tepes and their two young children, just 1 and 4 years old, found unharmed in the same home.

"As a journalist, we realize that these kids have to live their life now with what has happened and to create their lives," she said.

Multiple outlets reported McKee lived in Chicago, but worked as a vascular surgeon for OSF HealthCare in Rockford. McKee was not listed in that hospital system's directory, but came up as an OSF doctor when searching providers through insurance.

An OSF spokesperson said: "OSF is cooperating with authorities who will provide any further information. All questions should be directed to law enforcement authorities."
