Many people think of Thanksgiving weekend as a time to spend with family members, eat yourself into a food coma and watch sporting events on the television. Take advantage of what the city has to offer; whether you're looking to take a class, volunteer or just take in the sights. Take the whole family to watch the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade on November 28th from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The kids will love the giant balloons, colorful floats and marching bands. This is a free event that is catered towards those of all ages. Make sure to dress appropriately for this outdoor event and bundle up the kids so they can enjoy the sights and sounds.

Cantigny Park is a 500-acre park that is filled with historical museums, sprawling pathways and beautiful scenery. On November 25th at 6:30 p.m., Joyce Grattoni will be holding a floral arrangement class at Cantigny Park. This Thanksgiving Centerpiece event is meant to create a beautiful fresh arrangement for your entryway or Thanksgiving day table. The class fee is $45 and you can register online for a mother/daughter day on the break away from school.

Enrolling children in a cooking class during Thanksgiving break can be a great way to get them involved in the cooking process during the big day or for next year's festivities. The Kids' Table offers two classes in late November: Kids Can Cook Series and Tots Can Cook Series. The Kids Can Cook Series is geared towards children ages four to six or seven to 10 and the Tots Can Cook Series is made for toddlers that are two and three years old. The children's classes can be purchased in four-week sessions or for individual classes, costing only $25 per class. There are only 10 children in each class and parents are required to accompany their child. Check out the website calendar to partake in the Thanksgiving Celebration for children on November 23, 25 and 26.

Interfaith House is an organization that helps the homeless by providing meals, medical recovery and even educational sessions. Interfaith House is still in need of volunteers for serving Thanksgiving Dinner on November 28th from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a great opportunity to teach the kids that the true meaning behind the holiday is not just about eating turkey but about being grateful for what you have.
