5-Vehicle Pileup Turns Kennedy Into Parking Lot

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A five-vehicle pileup took out four lanes of the outbound Kennedy Expressway Wednesday morning.

The accident happened sometime before 6:30 a.m. on the outbound Kennedy just past Addison Street.

A La Baguette bakery truck hit the back of a sport-utility vehicle, which hit the back of a compact car, which broadsided another car, which hit a fifth car.

No one was seriously injured in the accident.

By 6:40 a.m., only the bakery truck and the SUV remained at the scene, but still, only one lane was open.

CBS 2's Kris Habermehl says the outbound Kennedy was backed up as far south as Division Street, and stopped altogether from Damen Avenue to Addison Street.

Travel times just from downtown to the Edens junction at Montrose Avenue were in excess of 50 minutes because of the accident.

Habermehl says reverse-commuters should consider taking Elston Avenue.
