BLOG: Heavy Rain In Maryland

The rain spread across the state overnight and hasn't really stopped since.  In fact, bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms have picked up through the day.  Since the rain is still coming down as I write this at 8 p.m., we don't have the final rainfall totals, but here are some as of 7 p.m.:

  • .83"      BWI-Marshall
  • .61"      Ocean City
  • .89"      Annapolis
  • 1.02"    Salisbury
  • 1.39"    Hagerstown
  • 2.04"    Dulles
  • 2.26"    Frederick

With all of the rain, we have a slew of watches, warnings and advisories in effect. A flood watch continues for most of Maryland (except the lower Eastern Shore) through midnight.  A few flood warnings are in effect for Montgomery and PG Counties through 9:30 p.m. A coastal flood advisory is in effect for the counties along the western side of the Bay through midnight for high tides running 1.5 - 2" above average.

The storm producing all of this rain is a slow mover, so we still have a few hours more of rain and heavy rain before it ends.  Ahead of the front, winds are still out of the south and it is warm.  Behind the front, the winds turn around to the northwest and much colder air is getting pulled down - even before the storm is gone.  So it's changing rain over to snow in western Maryland tonight.  There is a winter weather advisory in effect for Garrett and Allegany counties.  Farther east, the rain will come to an end before the colder air comes in overnight.  And in Baltimore, we will get close but probably stay above freezing anyway.  As for the winds, they are averaging 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph both ahead of and behind the front.

The air coming in overnight is cooler, but also drier.  Sunshine will take over tomorrow and help to warm us up.  We won't be in the upper 50s of today, but will still be close to the average of 50 for our high.  We will stay close to the average again on both Tuesday and Wednesday.  At the same time, the next storm will start moving our way.

Clouds will come back in again on Wednesday and then the rain will follow Thursday into Friday.  It's another slow moving storm and could produce some thunderstorms along the way.
