On May 4, 2007, an F5 tornado arrived in the dark, lasting 12 minutes -- 11 people were killed, 95 percent of the city was leveled and 85 percent of residents were left homeless. Entire buildings were reduced to rubble, including two schools, two churches and a hospital.
During a week of live broadcasts called "Tragedy to Triumph: Greensburg Rising," The Early Show will share the stories of the community - from homeowners to local business owners to the first responders - and show the progress of its redevelopment efforts.

With workers in the background, Greensburg City administrator Steve Hewitt told Price, "This town had to put itself in a position not to just survive after a damaging storm, but to thrive." Not only are residents rebuilding, they are rebuilding green.
Before our week in Greensburg, Kansas is over, The Early Show will complete an eco-friendly playground for the city's residents. Co-anchors Julie Chen, Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez, news anchor Russ Mitchell and Dave Price, staffers and volunteers, will all lend a hand.
While in Greensburg, members of The Early Show will roll up their sleeves to help residents in their quest to build an ecologically and economically sustainable town by building an eco-friendly playground in Old Well Park. Eco-friendly donations will also be gathered on our New York plaza to be sent to Greensburg.
