Jack Nicholson plays a mob boss in "The Departed," a new film from Martin Scorsese. Some of Mick Jagger's music is used on the movie's soundtrack. When the film opened in New York on Sept. 26, it was a ruby Tuesday night, because guess who ran into each other at the premiere party?
The charisma quotient here was huge, because Jack Nicholson is considered Hollywood royalty and at least one critic has described him as more "special effect" than actor. As for Mick Jagger, well, in the world of rock 'n' roll, the big shots don't come much bigger than this Rolling Stone.
So, in a way, you could say that in this photo, mainstream movies and classic rock incarnate are about to share a big, fuzzy hug right there at Guastivino's restaurant in New York City.
It takes one (living legend) to know one (living legend).
Finally, here it is: a hug of historic proportions. In a way. If you like Mick or Jack or both.
In the event that you care about such things, Sir Mick (yes, he is a real knight) turned 63 on July 26. And it may seem difficult to believe but naughty Jack will be turning 70 when his birthday rolls around. But that's not until April 22, which seems far enough away for now.
Mick Jagger, in the midst of the Stones' latest concert tour, "A Bigger Bang," dropped by the premiere party for "The Departed" only briefly. Jack Nicholson was able to hang out a little longer and reportedly was especially thrilled to meet actress Lauren Bacall at the party, too.
We may be looking too closely at this shot, but the beaming blonde woman in the background seems to be very much aware that she is witnessing a rare celebrity moment.
It appears that Jack and Mick used their influence to get a table. Note that the beaming blonde woman is nowhere in sight.
In "The Departed," Jack Nicholson's co-stars include Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. On the soundtrack, director Martin Scorsese uses Stones tunes, including "Gimme Shelter" and "Let It Loose."
Mick has four daughters, four sons and two granddaughters. Jack has two daughters and a son. As of Sept. 26, 2006, the night this photo was taken, both men were single, but Mick reportedly was dating a model.
