SOUND UP: TEXAS GOVERNOR GEORGE W. BUSH (CHEERS!)
NARR: With the race so close in Florida, voters are being bombarded with the dollars and details of dueling political plans. George W. Bush today pushed his plan to partially privatize Social Security.
SOT: George W. Bush/ IT'S NOT GONNA BE A GOVERNMENT PROGRAM, IT'S GONNA BE A PORTFOLIO THAT YOU CAN PASS ON FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT. // IT'S A DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING. (CHEERS)
NARR: In Orlando yesterday, Al Gore said Bush's plan amounted to social insecurity.
SOT: Al Gore/ THE STOCK MARKET CAN BE A GOOD INVESTMENT, BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE YOUR SAFETY NET, YOUR SAFETY NET PROGRAM, SOCIAL SECURITY AND PUT THAT AT RISK.
Whitaker on cam/ To listen to the candidates, you'd think this was simply a battle over competing programs. But this campaign's about more than the sum of their programs, it's about fundamentally different views of the role and scope of government.
NARR: Central to Bush's plans is a greater role for the private sector. (GRAPHIC***)
Greater individual responsibility and risk in Social Security. Private insurers for Medicare. Vouchers for students in failing public schools. Gore would keep Social Security and Medicare fully government run programs and he opposes public education funds for private vouchers. (END GRAPHIC***)
SOT: George W. Bush/ THE SURPLUS ISN'T THE GOVERNMENT'S MONEY, MR. GORE.
NARR: But the biggest disagreement is over Bush's $1.3-trillion tax cut. He says it would empower people and reduce government.
SOT: Al Gore/ THE WAY TO KEEP OUR PROSPERITY GOING IS TO HAVE BALANCED BUDGETS EVERY SINGLE YEAR AND WE OUGHT TO PAY DOWN THE NATIONAL DEBT.
SOT: George W. Bush/ IF YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY AND LOOK AT HIS PLANS YOU REALIZE THAT HIS VIEW OF GOVERNMENT IS TO GROW IT, EXPAND IT - GORE-GANTUAN GOVERNMENT.
(video: split screen from debate, both dressed in red tie, white shirt, blue suit)
NARR: At first glance, these two sons of politicians may look alike, but beneath the blizzard of words and numbers, this Republican and this Democrat actually are offering voters a choice. BW,CBSN, Port Richie, FL. >
