Christmas comes every year, in good times and bad, in war and peace, in triumph and in tragedy. The older we get the more bittersweet our feelings about Christmas because we're haunted by the faces, voices and memories of Christmas past.

Right now, no matter which side we're on in the bitter impeachment controversy, there's no joy in it.

There is no joy either in the military operations against Iraq. We wish they were not necessary. There's been no escaping the bad tidings that make up the news or the melancholy feelings that go with them.

You know what we need?

We need love and laughter and the comfort of family and friends. We need to think about and sing about peace and goodwill. We need everything that goes with Christmas and that Christmas stands for.

Jerry Herman put it in his musical.

"We need a little Christmas right this very minute.
Candles in the window.
Yes, we need a little Christmas right this very minute.
We need a little Christmas now."
