This week's highlights include the premiere of the noir thriller "The Black Dahlia," Justin Timberlake's new album, and the season premiere of "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC.
MOVIES:
Brian De Palma directs a film adaptation of James Ellroy's best-selling crime novel, "The Black Dahlia." It stars Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson, and Hilary Swank and hits theaters this week.
Based on a true story, "Gridiron Gang" stars The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson) as a juvenile detention camp probation officer who whips a group of troubled teens into a ferocious football team. It hits theaters Sept. 15.
Also in theaters this week: "Everyone's Hero," an animated film about a boy who sets out to help Babe Ruth win the 1932 World Series, features the voices of Brian Dennehy, William H. Macy, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Zach Braff plays an engaged thirtysomething guy who has second thoughts about taking the plunge with his already-pregnant fiancé (Jacinda Barrett) in "The Last Kiss." It opens Sept. 15.
TV:
Monday is a day of remembrance on many of the TV networks: The second half of ABC's much-talked-about "Path to 9/11" airs Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. … Also, NBC will air an updated version of the "Dateline" special "Flight 93". It includes new interviews and audiotapes from the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania …"Brothers Lost: Stories of 9/11" airs Monday at 11 p.m. on Cinemax and tells the stories of men who came together after losing their brothers in the attacks … "Dust to Dust: The Health Effects of 9/11" airs Sept. 11 at 11 p.m. on the Sundance Channel.
Tyra Banks and Martha Stewart gear up for season premieres of their chat-fests, which take place on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 respectively.
CBS' "Big Brother: All Stars" concludes on Sept. 12 and "Rock Star: Supernova" wraps up on Sept. 13. The most controversial season yet of "Survivor" begins Sept. 14 and a new season of "The Amazing Race" kicks off Sept. 17.
On Sept. 15, Anne Heche returns to TV in "Men in Trees," a new drama about a single writer who makes a move to Alaska ... where the ratio of men to women is something like 12-to-1.
MUSIC:
John Mayer's new album, "Continuum", hits stores on Tuesday … Nicole Richie's papa, Lionel, is back on the music scene this week with his new album, "Coming Home", available Tuesday. Nicole appears in the music video for the album's first single, "I Call It Love." … Justin Timberlake's new album "Future Sex/Love Sounds" is available Tuesday … Fresh from his Aug. 29 appearance on "Celebrity Duets," Peter Frampton returns with the new album, "Fingerprints," this week.
BOOKS:
MSNBC reporter Keith Olbermann's new book, "The Worst Person IN The World", is available on Sept. 11. Geraldo Rivera, Tom Cruise and Victoria Gotti are some of the famous faces who top his list.
THEATER:
Previews of George Bernard Shaw's drama "Heartbreak House" begin on Sept. 15 at Broadway's American Airlines Theatre. The show, which is directed by Robin Lefevre and officially opens on Oct. 11, stars Swoosie Kurtz, Philip Bosco, Byron Jennings, Lily Rabe, and Laila Robins.
Eve Ensler's "The Treatment," opens off-Broadway on Sept. 12. Dylan McDermott ("The Practice") stars as a military interrogator who sees a military psychologist for therapy.
DVD:
Before the premiere on Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. (who will Meredith choose, McDreamy or Finn?), watch the season that sizzled all over again: the DVD of "Grey's Anatomy: Season Two" is available on Tuesday.
All Jedis of the world please pay attention! 1977's "Star Wars" and 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" are available in two-disc, wide-screen DVD versions this week.
