"The One"

The McCain campaign isn't letting go of the "celebrity" theme they've launched to try and define (or at least get under the skin of) Barack Obama. They're up with a new Web ad called, "The One," which hits on the "messiah" narrative – in the same vein as this London Times column that got widespread attention during Obama's European trip last week.

The new ad opens with a deep-voiced narrator intoning, "it shall be known that in 2008, the world will be blessed. They will call him 'The One.'" The ad splices in a series of quotes from Obama throughout the campaign, including one where Obama talks about the light that will shine down upon voters as an epiphany (that one was a poke back at Hillary Clinton during the primaries). The ad end with this line: "Barack Obama may be 'The One,' but is he ready to lead.

The McCain camp sent the ad to supporters in a fund-raising appeal, calling it their "latest fun video." McCain spokeswoman Nicolle Wallace tells CBS News' John Bentley that there is an "important role for humor in all campaigns. I think all of us would slit our wrists if it wasn't for that."
