Subway Music Goes Above Ground

Most New Yorkers know subways can be filled with chaotic sounds of screeching metal, train announcements over intercoms and booming voices from people who turn train cars into soap boxes.

But, once in a while, platforms are filled with the beautiful, vibrant live music that reflects the diversity of New York City.

Some of the finest performers of the subway took their acts above ground to Lincoln Center Thursday. The sounds of gospel, Brazilian acoustic, the blues, classical music, bucket drumming and many more genres brought a little summer fun to the Avery Fisher Hall in Manhattan.

For one night, at least, underground music took center stage.
