Should Katie Holmes fear split from Scientology?

(CBS NEWS) Katie Holmes hasn't said much about her split from Tom Cruise, but former members of the Church of Scientology say it won't be easy separating herself from his church.

"What a bunch of former Scientologists told me," says Eliza Shapiro, of The Daily Beast, "was that she should be scared. Not only is it going to be daunting, but it might be scary and dangerous for her."

Holmes is living in New York with her six-year-old-daughter, Suri.

"There's definitely been speculation that Suri was being groomed to be part of the upper echelons of the Church of Scientology," Shapiro said on "CBS This Morning: Saturday," adding that Holmes was concerned "that Suri was about to become indoctrinated."

How concerned should Holmes be about the possible Scientology reaction if she indeed tries to break from the church? Former Scientologist Karen Pressley discussed it with "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Rebecca Jarvis and Anthony Mason. To see the interview, click on the video at left.

It's believed that's what led to Holmes to leave Cruise, the most high-profile Scientologist.

After a daily barrage of damaging headlines, the Cruise camp apparently responded Friday. Gossip and entertainment news website TMZ says a source close to the actor told it, "She (Katie) was totally committed to Scientology. She had enthusiasm for it and would voluntarily and gladly participate in it when Tom was off shooting movies. This is not a fight over religion. It's being used as a way to hurt Tom."

TomKat divorce: The Scientology factor

Holmes, the former "Dawson's Creek" star, was raised a Catholic and is being advised, according to some, by her father, a divorce lawyer in Akron, Ohio.

A new feature in Elle magazine indicates Holmes is making a bold break from the last seven years with Cruise, and Scientology.

Said Shapirok, "I think the church is really concerned that Katie - as have many other now-former Scientologists - (will) create a tell-all narrative about what goes on inside. ... If she even tells one detail, that's too much for the church. ... They don't want anything getting out about what they do."
