The Shorty Awards honors the best of social media, with an emphasis on Twitter users. Examples of award categories range from the typical best #Actor, #Actress or #Band to quirkier categories, like best #FakeAccount, #FanSite and @HealthJoinIn's #SocialFitness.

Winners even had to give their acceptance speech in 140-characters or less. "Something the Oscars can learn from," Jones told CBS News on the phone.

In true social-media fashion, smartphones were out during the entire ceremony and the audience was encouraged to live tweet the event. "We didn't see faces looking at us, we saw the back of smartphones," said Jones.

Presenters included "White Collar" star Tiffani Thiessen,Tumblr founder David Karp and Quora co-founder Charlie Cheever.

Among this year's winners were New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, who won a special award as Foursquare mayor of the year - beating out Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who is the Foursquare mayor of an International House of Pancakes in Santa Clara, Calif.

"Honored to accept the #ShortyAward for '@Foursquare Mayor of the Year' here in #NYC, the social media capital of the world!" @MikeBloomberg tweeted.

NASA won a Shorty Award for best use of a Twitter account in the government category.

"The Obama administration has placed a high priority on openness and on-line communications, and @NASA is honored to be recognized for its social media efforts with a Shorty Award," David Weaver, NASA's associate administrator for communications, said in a statement.

"We are inspired by the social media community and their passion for sharing our compelling story of reaching for new heights and keeping America the world leader in space exploration."
