Shermain Miles, Chicago woman arrested 396 times, sentenced to mental health and substance abuse program
(CBS) CHICAGO - Shermain Miles, a Chicago woman who has been arrested 396 times, has accepted a plea deal that will send her to a mental health and substance abuse treatment program, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
"All of us are reaching out to you and offering you, maybe for the first time in your life, a hand, OK?" Judge Peggy Chiampas told Miles in court on Monday.
Miles, who was dressed in a bright yellow prison jumpsuit, reportedly kept her hands behind her back and politely answered the judge's questions.
"I just want to thank you," she told the judge, according to CBS Chicago.
The 51-year-old Miles has been at Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln, Ill., since December. She was released in April 2011 after serving three years for an armed robbery conviction but was arrested several more times while on parole, triggering her return to prison, according to the station.
Among the reasons for her most recent arrests was an alleged attack on Alderman James Cappleman last summer. Miles pleaded guilty Monday in that case and in two separate cases involving allegations of trespassing and drinking alcohol on a public way.
Judge Chiampas sentenced Miles to time served in all three cases, but said she only did so because Miles agreed to submit to a mental health evaluation and follow-up treatment, as well as treatment for alcohol abuse at the Lincoln prison.
It is unclear when exactly Miles will be released from prison. As of Monday afternoon, Illinois Department of Corrections records listed Miles' parole date as "to be determined," the station reports.
