Senators Slam Islanders 9-2
Alexei Yashin scored his 21st and 22nd goals and added an assist as the Ottawa Senators set a club record for goals in a game in a 9-2 rout of the New York Islanders on Saturday night.
The nine goals topped the modern-era Senators' previous record of seven goals in a game, accomplished four times. The seven-goal margin of victory also set a club record, besting the previous mark of six, accomplished four times.
Shawn McEachern also scored twice and Radek Bonk, Magnus Arvedson, Steve Martins, Shaun Van Allen and Marian Hossa added goals for Ottawa. Ten Senators registered two points or more.
Zigmund Palffy scored both goals for the Islanders, the second on a power play with 12 seconds remaining.
Felix Potvin, who lost for the fifth straight time since joining the Islanders, was pulled after two periods with the score 7-1.
New York was outshot 43-22.
The loss ended a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) for the Islanders, who had struggled through an 11-game winless slide prior to that. Ottawa is 9-0-3 in the last 12 meetings between the two teams.
Yashin received his usual warm ovation from the crowd in the team's first appearence at home since his dispute with the National Arts Centre began.
Since the NAC disclosed on Jan. 19 that Yashin had rescinded the remaining $800,000 of a five-year, $1-million donation to the centre, both sides have held press conferences defending its interpretation of events.
"We Believe in You Yashin," read one sign in the stands.
Ottawa got going quickly, as the Senators led 3-0 at 6:15 of the first on two McEachern goals with Yashin's goal in between.
After Palffy beat Ron Tugnutt at 14:10, Arvedson scored to give the Senators a 4-1 lead after the period, outshooting the Islanders 18-9.
Bonk, Yashin and Martins scored in the second period.
Van Allen and Hossa beat Tommy Salo in the third period, prompting the crowd to chant "We want 10."
