Second Cup Café: The Fray

If you've ever tuned in to TV's "Grey's Anatomy," "ER," or "Bones," you may have already heard songs by The Fray, one of rock's hottest new bands. The Denver-based quartet's music — an uplifting, melody-driven mix of pop/rock songs — attracted the attention of Epic Records, which signed them in 2004 and released the group's debut album, "How To Save a Life," last fall.

Isaac Slade, lead vocalist and piano player, and Joe King, who plays guitar and also sings, formed the group in 2002. They quickly developed a loyal following in the Mile High city and earned the "Best New Band" title from Denver's "Westword Magazine" which led to substantial local airplay.

The exposure attracted drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist Dave Welsh, who complete the unusual lineup of piano mixed with guitar. The idea for their name rose from clashes the foursome had about song composition.

Fans of U2 or The Counting Crows should listen to the band's first single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)." The title track, "How To Save A Life" has special significance for Slade, who wrote the song after an experience as a mentor to a crack-addicted teen.

Last summer, the band toured with Weezer before their album release in September. This week The Fray, who is now headlining their own tour, visits The Saturday Early Show's Second Cup Café to perform songs from their new album.
