Riggleman Hired By Tribe

Jim Riggleman, fired Oct. 4 as manager of the Chicago Cubs, was hired Friday as a Cleveland Indians coach on the staff of new manager Charlie Manuel.

Riggleman, 46, expects to work as either a bench coach or third-base coach.

Ted Uhlaender, 59, a former New York Yankees scout who worked in player personnel with San Francisco for the past two seasons, was hired as a baserunning and outfield coach.

Clarence Jones, 57, who was Cleveland's outfield coach last season, will become hitting coach, the position held by Manuel before he was hired Monday to replace manager Mike Hargrove.

Riggleman had a 486-598 in seven seasons as a manager with San Diego and Chicago. The Cubs fired him last month after the team went 67-95 and finished last in the NL Central.

Riggleman was interviewed for the Cleveland managing job, which became vacant when Hargrove was fired after the Indians blew a 2-0 lead in the first round of the AL playoffs against Boston.
