Remembering Billy Taylor

Last night at New York's glorious Riverside Church, a packed house assembled to remember Billy Taylor who died two weeks ago. Billy was a musician who played with everyone, from Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald to Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Billy could play. There was no doubt. But, Billy's bigger contribution was as a teacher and evangelist for America's classical music. His radiovprograms. His years as a contributor to "Sunday Morning" on CBS. He reached millions. His Jazzmobile program has brought great music to neighborhoods all over the city for free. As we listened to tribute after tribute the program was connected by Billy's great music, including the civil rights anthem, "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free." Martin Luther King loved the song but, could never remember the title. He'd just say, 'Billy, play that Baptist-sounding thing." Billy had a gift. And he generous in the way he shared it.
