Red Wings Beat The Dominator

Even after 15 years in the NHL, Steve Yzerman is still learning things in hockey.

Yzerman scored two goals to top 1,400 career points and also moved into 12th place on the NHL career goal list as the Red Wings beat Dominik Hasek and the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 Sunday night.

Yzerman has scored nine of his 22 goals and also has eight assists in his last 13 games. He attributed part of the surge to a lesson learned while playing for the Canadian Olympic team in Nagano, Japan.

"Since I came back I've been trying to play with speed, to take off with the puck instead of just waiting for something to happen," Yzerman said. "My chances come with skating. I really try to get it and accelerate."

Yzerman became the 13th player in NHL history to reach 1,400 points when his long shot deflected off Buffalo defenseman Bob Boughner and past Hasek 3:40 into the third.

It gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead, then Kris Draper scored at 5:11 to give Detroit a two-goal margin. Yzerman added another goal on a shorthanded breakaway at 11:03.

Yzerman 561st goal moved him past Guy Lafleur on the all-time NHL list.

"He's a guy I grew up watching in Ottawa when the Canadiens were on every Saturday night," Yzerman said. "When I was growing up those were my heroes, so it's nice to have my name with them.

"But it's hard to place yourself with them."

Detroit defenseman Larry Murphy also reached a milestone. He assisted on Yzerman's second goal to become the 36th player with 1,100 career points.

"I'm proud of it; it wasn't something I anticipated happening," Murphy said. "But you just keep playing, and I've been very fortunate."

Hasek, who shut out his last two opponents, faced 38 shots. Tomas Holmstrom also scored for Detroit.

"They got two lucky breaks," Hasek said. "The first goal defelected from the pad, the second deflected from my own player. Probably the third goal was the key goal of the game."

Donald Audette and Paul Kruse scored for Buffalo.

Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood made 24 saves. He was starting his second straight game after missing five games with a groin pull.

The win, a day after the Red Wings lost 3-2 at St. Louis, ended Detroit's three-game winless streak (0-1-2) while snapping Buffalo's season-high three-game winning streak.

"We had a tough game yesterday and wanted to rebound today," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said.

Buffalo has lost its last five games against Detroit.

Holmstrom ended Hasek's shutout streak at 172 minutes, 16 seconds. Holmstrom was near the right slot when he deflected Dmitri Mironov's shot from the point into the net 3:37 into the second period.

The power-play goal came with 23 seconds remaining in Geof Sanderson's double-minor for high sticking at the end of the first period.

Buffalo, outshot 14-3 in the first period, ended up with more good scoring chances in the second. But Osgood turned the Sabres away.

After Osgood stopped four shots in one sequence midway through the period, the chant of "Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie ..." was heard in Joe Louis Arena for the first time in a long time.

"They expect me to play well all the time, so if I don't they can be unhappy," Osgood said. "If they're behind me, I can play that much better."

The cheers quieted when Audette scored just 24 seconds into the third period.

After Yzerman's first goal put Detroit back on top, Draper finished off a 2-on-1 break with Doug Brown by scoring his 12th goal. Yzerman's second goal gave the Red Wings more than enough insurance to survive Kruse's late goal.
