Penguins Rookie Clips Wings

Pittsburgh Penguins rookie Toby Petersen stepped in Sunday after Josef Beranek got hurt and didn't miss a beat.

Petersen took a pass from Jaromir Jagr early in the third period and sent a shot through Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood's legs for his first NHL goal, lifting Pittsburgh past Detroit 4-3.

"It's real thrilling to have the first one be a game-winner, especially to have it come from Jaromir Jagr, the great play that he made," Petersen said.

Jagr, who has scored only one goal in his past 11 games, didn't mind being the setup man for Petersen.

"He was playing very well," Jagr said. "Before, he didn't shoot many shots. The first time he tried to shoot, he scored. I'm very happy for him."

The Red Wings went up 1-0 when Vyacheslav Kozlov backhanded a rebound past Pittsburgh goalie Garth Snow at 11:49 of the first period. It was the Red Wings' first power-play goal in four games.

The Penguins tied it on Kip Miller's power-play goal at 7:45 of the second. Miller, in his second game back from a groin strain, has two goals this season.

Pittsburgh took its first lead at 13:12 of the second. Detroit goalie Chris Osgood stopped Martin Straka's shot from the left point, but Michal Rozsival collected the rebound and sent it high over Osgood.

It was Rozsival's first goal since Jan. 27 against Atlanta, a span of 49 games.

The Red Wings tied it 2-2 on Steve Yzerman's goal from the left circle at 15:24, his second goal in as many games. The Detroit center played his fourth game since returning from knee surgery and just his sixth this season.

Before Friday's victory over Philadelphia, Yzerman hadn't scored since March 27.

Straka broke in alone and beat Osgood at 16:02 to regain the lead for the Penguins.

"There was a lot of offense in the game," Detroit coach Scotty Bowman said. "We gave up the blue line a little early. They've got a lot of offensive players. We spent too much time in our own zone."

The Red Wings were given a two-man advantage for two minutes when Matthew Barnaby and Rozsival were called for penalties at 16:53.

Brendan Shanahan brought the Red Wings back into a tie 41 seconds into the power play when he came in on the left side and pushed a rebound past Snow, who argued that Tomas Holmstrom interfered with him in the crease.

It was Shanahan's second goal in the past two games and his 11th on the season.

The best of Snow's 33 saves came with a minute and a half to play, when he stopped Shanahan and Yzerman.

"I just tried to throw my pads," said Snow. "I knew on the rebound I extended my right leg, and I think it was Shanahan that hit it. Then it went right to Yzerman and I was kind of in the splits. I did a two-pad rollover. It wasn't technically a sound move but it worked in a desperate situation."
