Mayor Apologizes To Wells


The mayor is apologizing for comments Cleveland Indians fans may have made about an opposing player's dead mother.

Mayor Michael R. White sent a letter of apology to New York Yankees pitcher David Wells, owner George Steinbrenner and New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. White wrote he understood Wells' pain because his own mother died recently.

    Forum: Did the apology come too late?

  • "When you wake up in the morning and you read in The New York Times about Cleveland fans talking about a sports players' dead mother, that's not how we want to be known," White said Thursday.

    Wells was upset about comments he said Cleveland fans made during Game 5 of the ALCS about his mother. Wells said his mother died 1 ½ years ago.
