Maple Leafs Blank The Wings

It's been pretty simple for Toronto this season: if Mats Sundin gets a point, the Maple Leafs don't lose.

Sundin scored twice and Curtis Joseph made 29 saves to lead the Maple Leafs to a 3-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

The Maple Leafs improved to 14-0-1-1 when Sundin has a point and extended their road winning streak to four games. The Red Wings were shut out for the second straight game.

Jonas Hoglund's shot was deflected to Sundin, who managed to put it into the right side of the net at 3:39 of the first period.

"Jonas shot it and it went off one of their players and hit one in the chest and came right down on my stick," Sundin said. "I had an empty net so that was a flukey one."

  • Then Hoglund sprung Sundin for a breakaway and he beat Manny Legace high at 15:10 of the first.

"Those are nice," Sundin said of Hoglund's pass. "I told him, too, it's been a long time since I had a breakaway like that from the blue line. He made a great play on that goal."

Hoglund wasn't surprised by his linemate's play, or by the way the team responded.

"He's our leader," he said. "He's obviously our best player on the team so when he scores and gets the jump, we're a much better team. He makes everyone else pick up their game."

Yanic Perreault gave Toronto a 3-0 lead with 17:42 left when he beat a sliding Legace by putting the puck in the top of the net.

Perreault has two goals and four assists in his past four games. Sergei Berezin assisted on the goalextending his point streak to five games.

Joseph earned his 30th career shutout and second against the Red Wings.

"I think anytime you don't let any goals in in this building against this team, with all the experience and talent they have, you feel pretty good," Joseph said.

The Red Wings were also shut out Saturday night in Tampa Bay 3-0.

"It happens," Detroit forward Brendan Shanahan said. "It's no fun when it happens, especially when it's consecutive."

It was the first time Detroit was shut out in consecutive games since the 1990-91 season when the Red Wings lost 5-0 at Pittsburgh on Dec. 28, 1990 and 4-0 at home against Chicago on New Year's Eve.

    Notes

There was a brief video tribute and owners Mike and Marian Ilitch presented Bowman with a crystal globe. During the second period, the Red Wings displayed a taped message from Hockey Night in Canada's Don Cherry and Ron MacLean.
  • The Maple Leafs have outscored their opponents 30-16 in the first period.
