Katie Couric's Notebook: stealing pens

Urban Dictionary.com calls it cleptopenia. It might not be a true clinical disorder, but it's certainly an epidemic.

You know how the story goes.

Bob from accounting stops by to sign an invoice, but...oops...he forgot his pen. "Oh, here, borrow mine," you say, and part of you knows deep down as that Papermate hits his paw there's about a 10 percent chance you'll ever get it back.

And then along comes Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic. He's a viral sensationon YouTube for his five finger discount on a new writing utensil in Chile. It's a bold cleptopeniac, indeed, who perpetrates his heist in plain view of rolling cameras.

President Klaus's spokesman explained it's totally customary to keep the ceremonial pen from press conferences.

OK. Fair enough.

But speaking on behalf of all who've been bitten by a Bic burglar, good...well...penmanship...apparently is a dying art.

That's a page from my notebook.

I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.
