Julianne Moore talks new movie, politics and family
Julianne Moore got her start in Hollywood on the famed CBS soap opera, "As the World Turns." She returned Monday to her "old stomping ground" -- Studio 57, where she spent three years filming for the show -- and took a moment to mock her younger self.
"Oh God, there I am," Moore told "CBS This Morning, watching an old clip of her double role as Sabrina Hughes and her half-sister.
"Who's also her cousin," Moore added, laughing. "Because, get this, we have the same father and our mothers are sisters, so that's so disgusting."
The actress has moved on to become an Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actress, starring in more than 60 movies, including hits like "Boogie Nights," "The Big Lebowski" and "The Kids Are All Right." While Moore is well-known for her comedic roles, she won an Oscar in 2015 for her portrayal of a professor with early-onset Alzheimer's disease in "Still Alice."
Now, Moore is back to comedy in her new movie, "Maggie's Plan," in which she plays Georgette, whose husband leaves her for his mistress. That second wife then decides she wants to give him back and Georgette agrees to the plan. Moore said she had no issue returning to comedy after her contrasting role in "Still Alice."
"I love comedy. I think the difference between drama and comedy is always tone," Moore said. "One of the things that's interesting about this movie... is that it's the world not as it is but as you wish it would be, so it's sort of a slightly elevated tone, and that's what you're always trying to find when you're working in comedy, I think."
Moore adopted an accent for her role as Georgette, whom she described as a "formidable" and "commanding" Danish professor.
In addition to her busy acting career, Moore is also politically active. She endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton for president and is also a gun control advocate.
Moore is also happily married to her husband, Bart Freundlich, a film director, and has a daughter and son, who is heading off to college.
"I don't know that you're ever really ready but I think you just have to go with it and experience it as it happens, but we're very proud of him and he's really a wonderful young man," she said.
"Maggie's Plan" will be released on May 20.
