'Idol' Dials Wrong Numbers

The 11 contestants left on Fox's reality hit "American Idol" are getting another shot at stardom.

Phone numbers that allowed viewers to pick their favorite contestant were incorrectly displayed during Tuesday's show, prompting a re-vote during the show scheduled to air Wednesday, the network said in a statement.

Phone lines will remain open for two hours following the episode, when another singer will be booted off this week by viewers. The contestant with the fewest votes goes home.

In the running are Bo Bice, Anthony Fedorov, Constantine Maroulis, Anwar Robinson, Scott Savol, Nikko Smith, Mikalah Gordon, Jessica Sierra, Vonzell Solomon, Nadia Turner and Carrie Underwood.

The series, which is in its fourth season, draws nearly 30 million viewers an episode.

Earlier this month, Mario Vazquez, a 27-year-old New York City native, stunned "Idol" watchers when he bolted from the show last week for reasons he would only describe as "personal." A fan favorite, he was considered a top contender for the show's crown.

He then hired Jess L. Rosen — the man who sprung Clay Aiken from the contract binding him to the 19 Entertainment management company owned by "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller.

19 Entertainment oversees not just the recording deal for "American Idol" stars, but also merchandising, touring, sponsorship and movie deals. The "Idol" contracts are considering among the more restrictive in the industry.

Vazquez had cited family issues for his decision to leave the competition.

"With the little privacy that I do have, I'm just trying to keep it that way," he said.

But he spoofed his decision to quit "Idol" on the CBS Late Show with David Letterman. He quit reading the "Top Ten Reasons I Quit 'American Idol'" midway through the list.

"Reason Number Four: Screw it — I'm quitting this, too." And he walked off the set.
