Growth in the Amazon.com

Amazon.com gets into the music business. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. It has been one of the biggest success stories on the Internet. Amazon.com is less than three years old and is the leading retailer of books on the Internet. And now, says Vice President Rick Ayre, the company is branching out...

"Our tag line used to be the earth's biggest book store and now our tag line is books, music and more. We're launching a music store and the music store will do everything as well for music as our book store does for books."

Amazon led the way in selling books online. When it comes to music, virtual stores like CDNow and Music Boulevard have had a head start. Says Ayre...Amazon has created the same kind of online shopping experience on the music end that has made it so successful in books, and...

"We already have two and a quarter million customer accounts, credit card accounts with customers who purchase books from us and a lot of those people also like music."

Customer reviews are a staple as are samples of tracks in Real Audio. Even with shipping costs Amazon says you'll save money over traditional music stores...

"The proposition is very simple. Convenience, selection, price, great customer service. We're incredibly customer focused."

A formula that is hard to bet against.
