GM to extend Chevy Volt production pause

(AP) DETROIT - General Motors (GM) is suspending production of the Chevrolet Volt for an extra week this summer to control inventory.

But a spokeswoman says the company sold a record number of the electric cars in March and may cancel the extra week if strong sales continue.

Most auto factories close for two weeks in July to get updated for the new model year. GM added a third week at the Volt factory in Detroit.

The plant was shut down for five weeks in March and April because of disappointing sales. Ward's Automotive says GM had more than 6,300 Volts for sale in the U.S. at the end of February - enough to supply dealers for 154 days.

GM says it sold more than 2,000 Volts in March.
