Giants Acquire Carter From Orioles
Joe Carter, the hero of the 1993 World Series but a bust in Baltimore, was traded by the Orioles to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night for minor league pitcher Darin Blood.
Carter, 38, was hitting .247 with 11 homers and 34 RBIs while splitting time between designated hitter and the outfield.
The move was announced after he scored the winning run ahead of Lenny Webster

Carter goes from one wild-card contender to another. He joins his sixth major league team in a career that began in 1983 with the Chicago Cubs.
Carter's greatest moment came when he homered in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 6 of the 1993 World Series to give the Toronto Blue Jays the championship over Philadelphia.
The move came two days after the Orioles said they would stand pat to mount a push for the playoffs.
"Our situation is that we've got a long ways to go to get back in the race, and we feel we're headed that way," Orioles general manager Pat Gillick said.
"But at the same time, if we feel we can pick up somebody along the way who can help us in the future, then we're going to do that. We feel that Darin Blood is that guy."
Blood, 23, was 4-5 with a 4.66 ERA at Triple-A Fresno.
Carter signed as a free agent with Baltimore before this season. He has repeatedly said he will retire after this year.
The Giants rank among the bottom in the NL with only 80 home runs this year. Earlier in the day, San Francisco made a five-player trade with Cleveland, getting reliever Jose Mesa and giving up reliever Steve Reed.
