For Anakin, Everything's Jake

When Jake Lloyd was filming Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace in Tunisia, someone offered to buy his little sister.

"I was going to take them up on the offer," says the 10-year-old actor. "But my mom wouldn't let me."

Just the kind of talk one would expect from Darth Vader. And, as it happens, Jake plays the young Anakin Skywalker, fated to become Vader in future Star Wars episodes.

Adventures in Tunisia were not the only part of being a member of the Star Wars cast. He also needed to keep his mouth shut when friends tried to pry details from him about the movie's plot.

"I'd tell them some science fiction book plot," he says, "[and they'd say], 'That doesn't sound like Star Wars.'"

Among his own favorite movies, Jake counts Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Goldeneye (1995), and, especially, Harvey (1950) starring James Stewart, whom he lists among his favorite actors, along with Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, and the comedian Sinbad.

What about actresses? CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen asked him if he thinks they're cute.

Jake: "I don't think most of them are cute."

He doesn't think Julia Roberts is cute?

Jake: "I have no comment."

How about somebody who's on Party of Five or something?

Jake: "I don't watch Party of Five. I don't like those kinds of shows."

Melrose Place?

Jake: "No."

But he might like those kinds of programs someday. Does he know that?

Jake: "Yes, I do. My dad loves them."

Jake's tips for aspiring actors:

  • You have to really, really want it.
  • Talk about it every day for weeks and months.
  • Develop the drive to get it done.
  • Get a good agent.
