Flames Get The Point With Tie

The Calgary Flames finally got their first point of the season.

Cory Stillman scored with 3:53 left in the third period to cap a three-goal comeback as the Flames earned a 3-3 tie with the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.

With the tie, the Flames avoided a fourth straight loss and became the last NHL team to earn its first point this year.

"This is definitely a good tie," Stillman said. "If we get anything out of the game, it's a positive third period that shows we can score goals if we work hard and everyone plays well."

  • Steve Smith's slap shot was wide of the net, but was deflected past Hurricanes goaltender Arturs Irbe and then moved back in front by Rene Corbet. Stillman was alone in front of the net and scored the tying goal with Irbe out of position.

"To start off the season 0-3 was not a good start, so although a tie is not great, it's going to help us," Stillman said.

Trailing 3-0 entering the third, Clarke Wilm scored 5:38 into the period. Then, 24 seconds later, after Marek Malik's spearing penalty to put the Flames on a power play, Stillman won a faceoff back to Morris who fired a wrist shot from the blue-line that eluded a screened Irbe.

Sami Kapanen had a goal and two assists to lead Carolina. Ron Francis and David Tanabe, with his first NHL goal, also scored. Francis lso had an assist to move into a tie with Marcel Dionne for sixth in the NHL in career assists with 1,040.

Bates Battaglia added two assists for the Hurricanes, who have lost just once as they begin the year on a season-opening nine-game road trip.

"We really played well in the first two periods," Kapanen said. "But we then we made a few mistakes and all of a sudden it was an even game, that's hockey."

Carolina got the best scoring chances in overtime, despite being outshot 4-1. Jeff O'Neill was stopped by Grant Fuhr on a breakaway and Robert Kron banked a shot off the goal post.

Arturs Irbe made his fourth straight start in goal for Carolina and made 26 saves.

Despite being beaten on the first shot of the game, Fuhr recovered and finished with 26 saves. Fuhr's best stop came immediately after Stillman's goal when Kapanen moved on a breakaway.

Jarome Iginla was in Calgary's lineup for the first time this season after agreeing to a three-year contract last Friday.

"The first shift was a little bit rough, but as the game went on I chipped a little bit of the rust off each shift," Iginla said.
