Fire Engulfs N.J. Condo Complex

Last Updated 11:10 a.m. ET

RAHWAY, N.J. - Firefighters have backed away from fire at a condominium complex under construction in Rahway and are letting it burn out.

The fire started around 1:30 a.m. at the three-story-tall construction site along Route 27.

The billowing smoke from the blaze was so intense that it could be reportedly smelled along Manhattan's West Side Highway, about 25 miles away.

Route 27, which feeds into several main arteries connecting New Jersey to New York City, was closed for hours while an estimated 100 firefighters from 10 towns fought the blaze.

Rahway Fire Battalion Chief David Taylor said there were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
